Totally asymmetric exclusion process fed by using a non-Poissonian clock

In this article we consider the one-dimensional totally asymmetric open-boundary exclusion process fed by a process with power-law-distributed waiting times. More specifically, we use a modified Pareto distribution to define the jump rate for jumps into the system. We then characterize the propagation of fluctuations through the system by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and by numerical evaluation of the steady-state partition function. peerReviewed
An Empirical Investigation of Heavy Tails in Emerging Markets and Robust Estimation of the Pareto Tail Index

In this work we analyze and compare the performances of VaR-based estimatorswith respect to three different classes of distributions, i.e., Gaussian, Stable and Pareto, and to different emerging markets, i.e., Egypt, Qatar and Mexico. This is motivated by the evidence that there are points of distinction between emerging and developed markets mainly relating to the speed and reliability of information available to investors.We propose a computational Threshold Accepting-VaR based algorithm (TAVaR) for optimally estimating the Pareto tail index. A Monte Carlo bias estimation analysis is also carried out by comparing our proposed methodology with the Hill estimator and a variant of it.
Poverty Reduction: The Paradox of the Endogenous Poverty Line

When evaluating poverty, the relative poverty line may be considered as a percentage of the median income or it may be a percentage of the average income. It is proved that, with a poverty line relative to the median income, reducing poverty may become less costly in proportion to the total income as poverty increases (measured by the Sen, the Sen-Shorrocks-Thon or the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty indexes) by passing from a Lorenz concentration curve to another curve associated with more poverty. AbstractCleansing data from synonyms and homonyms is a relevant task in fields where high quality of data is crucial, for example in disease registries and medical research networks. Record linkage provides methods for minimizing synonym and homonym errors thereby improving data quality. We focus our attention to the case of homonym errors (in the following denoted as ‘false matches’), in which records belonging to different entities are wrongly classified as equal. Limit order placement as an utility maximization problem and the origin of power law distribution of limit order prices

I consider the problem of the optimal limit order price of a financial asset in the framework of the maximization of the utility function of the investor. The analytical solution of the problem gives insight on the origin of the recently empirically observed power law distribution of limit order prices. In the framework of the model, the most likely proximate cause of this power law is a power law heterogeneity of traders' investment time horizons .
How to Improve the Reliability of Chord?

In this paper we focus on Chord P2P protocol and we study the process of unexpected departures of nodes from this system. Each of such departures may effect in losing any information and in classical versions of this protocol the probability of losing some information is proportional to the quantity of information put into this system. This effect can be partially solved by gathering in the protocol multiple copies (replicas) of information. The replication mechanism was proposed by many authors. Stability in a System subject to Noise with Regulated Periodicity

The stability of a simple dynamical system subject to multiplicative one-side pulse noise with hidden periodicity is investigated both analytically and numerically. The stability analysis is based on the exact result for the characteristic functional of the renewal pulse process. The influence of the memory effects on the stability condition is analyzed for two cases: (i) the dead-time-distorted poissonian process, and (ii) the renewal process with Pareto distribution. We show that, for fixed noise intensity, the system can be stable when the noise is characterized by high periodicity and unstable at low periodicity.
